Franz E. Velarde, M.D.

Interventional Radiologist

Dr. Franz Velarde received his medical degree with honors from the Universidad de Panamá. Following his graduation, he completed two years of a Clinical Internship.

Dr. Velarde began his extensive post-graduate training in the Diagnostic Radiology Residency program of Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, at Clínica Londres and Hospital Angeles del Pedregal.

He then completed a second Diagnostic Radiology Residency at the University of Florida.

Dr. Velarde went on to complete a Fellowship in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at Cornell University, based at the prestigious New York Presbyterian Hospital and Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Dr. Velarde has had the opportunity to earn several honors and awards over the course of his career, including:

  • Highest Score, National Boards of Radiology, México

Shortly after graduating, and with nine full years of training in image-guided diagnosis and minimally invasive treatments, Dr. Velarde moved to McAllen, Texas. Here he built and led one of the first Interventional Radiology services in the area. He later joined a radiology group, acting as the Director of Interventional Radiology for three community hospitals with almost 1,000 beds.

Dr. Velarde is a member of several professional organizations, including the Society of Interventional Radiology, the American Vein and Lymphatic Society, the American College of Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America, and the Sociedad Iberoamericana de Intervencionismo.

The Vein Wellness Clinic in McAllen, Texas was founded by Dr. Velarde and proudly offers the highest level of care and the latest technology available for the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency and varicose veins.

Dr. Velarde is known for his personalized approach to great patient care. After giving each patient a proper evaluation, he will customize a treatment plan for them to include the least invasive and most effective techniques. These may include radiofrequency ablation, stab phlebectomy (small incision vein removals), and injection sclerotherapy, where indicated.
